Think about your earliest memory of speaking in front of a group. I’ll wait…

Did you remember something from school? Maybe giving a book report or presenting at a science fair? Perhaps your memory was even earlier, like reading aloud from a book in 2nd grade. When we really think about it, public speaking is something we’ve all done our entire lives. 

So why is this an area we all seem to struggle with? 

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 75% of people have a fear of public speaking. It’s the #1 fear in the world! 

I’ve spoken to hundreds of individuals about speaking up and heard responses like, “I don’t want to disappoint anyone,” and, “I hate the spotlight effect.” Not to mention the sheer number of people that brought up the “rush of anxiety” they feel when they first start to talk to a group of more than 8 or so people. 

Looking at all the reasons why we struggle with public speaking, I truly believe it’s a fear of judgment. 

We’re worried our audience will think, “she doesn’t really know what she’s talking about,” or, “she sounds so nervous.” We want to maintain our respect with the audience while making sure they understand our message. And all the issues that come up around our fear of speaking in front of others center around our fear of being judged by those same people. 

When you’re worried about the things people will think about you as you’re speaking, pause and ask yourself, “would I think that about someone else?” Chances are, the answer is no.
