I’m always on the hunt for a quick fix or a hack to do something faster or more efficiently. And the unfortunate truth is most of the time, a shortcut won’t get you the results you want – you’ll end up taking the scenic route to your destination (I’m looking at you, Waze). 

That said, there are things you can do to start making small improvements which will add up to big gains over time. The great thing about learning to be a better speaker and communicator is that we do it all the time, so there are infinite opportunities to try something new and improve.

There are 5 easy ways you can start to be a better speaker…today!

Slow down

Speak at a slower rate than you think you should. This allows your audience to stay with you and take in what you’re saying.

Pause

After each thought, take a pause and count to 3…for real! This gives your audience a chance to digest what you said.

Speak up

We can’t understand what we can’t hear. Speaking a little louder than you think you should will likely be just the right volume.

Simple words

Big words and complicated vocabulary makes your audience’s brain work harder…don’t make them work to understand your message.

Ditch slides

Spend your time outlining what you’ll say…not on some slides. You’ll feel more confident speaking on the fly over time.
