Years ago, we were celebrating a family birthday – so long ago I don’t remember exactly whose birthday this was. The normal birthday deal was to go out to dinner, come home and have some cake and open presents.

As we finished singing “Happy Birthday” to this particular celebrant, my mom mentioned how depressing the serenade was…it was slow, dragging on, and sounded more like a funeral dirge than a celebration song. We all laughed because it was painfully true! She said, “we’re going to sing it again fast and happy!”

So we did…and what a difference it made!!!

We all laughed so hard on that do-over because we realized how much of a drag the happy birthday song can be. 

It’s a good lesson in other areas of life also. What are you doing that should be fun but has become a bummer? Maybe your team meetings drag on, or your workout routine has become boring. Think about a small change you could make to add some fun. Throw an icebreaker into your meeting, or try a new type of workout – or even a new playlist.

It’s easy to start taking ourselves too seriously and forget the fun. But if a task isn’t fun, what’s the freaking point? 

Since that one birthday celebration, my family sings twice on every person’s birthday and the tradition has carried beyond our family into friends and acquaintances.
