What are you doing in your life that you never expected? I’ll go first…
I’m coaching my son’s soccer team! ME – the woman who has never played a sport in her life. Like…how did this happen???
Last year the choice was to coach his team or he might not play (I registered him late so he was on the waitlist).
My husband is the coach in our family…not because he’s the dad, or because he was an athlete. He’s actually a coach for his profession. His Master’s degree is even in Sports Psychology. So…he knows what he’s doing.
But AYSO soccer overlaps with his collegiate basketball season, so he can’t commit to being the coach, at least not fully.
When I tell you I was reluctant to sign up as the head coach, I really mean it.
Honestly, no one was more surprised than me. Yet, here we are…back at it for the second year. Me as the head coach, and my husband as an assistant.
Now, it sounded crazy to sign up, but when I thought more about it, something started to feel inevitable.
I’ve learned a lot about teams from my husband in our 21 years together. I’ve also spent a lot of time developing teams within my corporate career. As a couple, we talk frequently about the alignment between work teams and sports teams.
On top of that, my son had a couple of years with sub-par experiences – flaky coaches and/or unorganized teams. So when we were put in the position of, “you coach or he doesn’t play,” it didn’t really seem like a choice.
I figured I could do at least as good of a job as the average youth team volunteer. It’s August 2023 and we’re gearing up to start our 12U season, which feels way more serious than coaching the lower divisions. I’m doing it even though I still don’t feel like it’s my “calling”.
Sometimes we do things because of circumstance over desire, which I have done less and less of over the course of my career (and life). Those things are really reserved for tasks involving the kids…like being on the PTA and tailoring dance costumes. But I digress.
When it comes to business, I’m fiercely focused on alignment and building offers that help my clients do the same.
Where in your life are you doing the “shoulds” instead of the “hell yeahs”? Send me an email…I’d love to chat!
